Philippine Independence: The Most Significant Event In Our Country’s History.

 

       Independence Day (Filipino: Araw ng Kasarinlán; also known as Araw ng Kalayaan, "Day of Freedom") is an annual national holiday in the Philippines observed on June 12, commemorating the declaration of Philippine independence from Spain in 1898. On June 5, 1898, Aguinaldo issued a decree at his house located in what was then known as Cavite El Viejo proclaiming June 12, 1898 as the day of independence. The Acta de la Proclamacion de la Independencia del Pueblo Filipino was solemnly read by its author, Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista, Aguinaldo's war counselor and special delegate. The 21-page declaration was signed by 98 Filipinos, appointed by Aguinaldo, and one retired American artillery officer, Colonel L.                      National Flag Day in the Philippines is celebrated on May 28. It commemorates the first use of the Philippine flag after the victory in the Battle of Alapan in 1898. The current national flag of the Philippines was created by the Filipino revolutionary Emilio Aguinaldo in 1897. It is a horizontal bicolor of royal blue over scarlet red. There is a white equilateral triangle at the hoist with a golden sun with 8 rays in the center and a 5-pointed gold star at each vertex. The flag was first raised after the Battle of Alapan that occurred on May 28, 1898. The battle was fought between the Filipino revolutionaries led by Aguinaldo and Spanish troops. The Spanish were defeated, and the revolutionaries recaptured the province of Cavite. After the battle, Aguinaldo entered Cavite City and unfurled the would-be national flag for the first time. Flag Day in the Philippines is marked with the raising of the national flag. The flag is permanently displayed from May 28 to June 12 (Independence Day) by all government offices and agencies, businesses, educational institutions and private residences. In recent years, the flag days have been extended until June 30 to celebrate the country's independence and promote patriotism.                      The declaration of independence is one of the most important events in Philippine history. The country was colonized by many nations for hundreds of years, and finally achieving the freedom they yearned after all the lost and sacrifices is a huge milestone. As we celebrate the holiday, may we not forget its significance in our country’s history. Our heroes put their lives at risk, so let’s remember the sacrifices of our heroes. As well, let us all show our love for our country, and lastly but not definitely the least, let’s spread awareness of Filipino history and culture.
